What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement Insurance – Extra coverage through an approved private insurance company that fills gaps or “supplements” what Original Medicare doesn’t cover. Also known as a Medigap plan.  Original Medicare has deductibles and does not cover 100% of medical costs.

About Medicare Supplement Insurance

Supplement Plans offer a guarantee issue Period.  During a Guarantee Issue Period, a Medicare eligible individual can apply without answering medical health questions.

First, you must have an active Part A & B
Medicare Supplement only supplements costs not covered by Original Medicare
Plans have monthly premiums
These are individual plans and each individual has their own policy.
Plans are available by state and can be sold by a licensed insurance company.
Standardized plans are guaranteed renewable. The plan can not be cancelled due to the health of the policy holder.
From 1/1/2006 - There is no offering of a Supplement Plan that will include drug coverage. This is coverage that must be purchased separately.
If a provider bills Original Medicare, Part A or Part B will be the primary payer. The remainder will be paid by the supplement policy. Any stated deductibles or co-pays must be completed first.
Medicare Supplement Insurance does not cover:

  • Long-term care (like non-skilled care you get in a nursing home)
  • Vision or dental services
  • Hearing aids
  • Eyeglasses
  • Private-duty nursing
Some states have an annual enrollment period for Medicare Supplement Insurance plans. If your state does not have an annual enrollment period, you may be asked to complete a medical health questionnaire on your plan change application.
Any Medicare beneficiary who was Medicare-eligible prior to January 1, 2020, can enroll in Plan F.
If you are moving into or out of WI, MN or MA you will have to change your plan because the standardized plans are not offered in these states. For any other state, you do not need to change your Supplement plan if you move.
A Medicare Supplement Plan F or G policy that provides all the features and benefits of a standard Plan F or G, but at a substantially lower premium. A calendar-year deductible, set by the federal government, applies.
